Located on the first floor of the African American Art & Culture Complex, the Buriel Clay Theatre was named after Mr. Buriel Clay, a prominent African American Playwright and Poet from San Francisco. The two hundred and ten (210) seat theatre has hosted theatrical dramas, dance productions, musical concerts, film and video screenings, seminars and workshops.

Mr. Buriel Clay was one of the first African Americans to establish a Cultural Center in the City of San Francisco in the 1960's. Due to the efforts of Buriel Clay he was able to pull together an impressive proposal and conceptualize what we now have today, a culture complex in the African American Community for all to enjoy. He was co-founder and the first official Director of the Western Addition Cultural Center which was housed in our present location (762 Fulton Street).
