ONE YEAR LATER…A Community Photographic Exhibit of the 56th Presidential Inauguration
January 20 – May 27, 2010
Several local community members, including the AAACC Executive Director, worked tirelessly to campaign for Barack Obama and also flew over 3,000 miles to witness the historic occasion. We collectively watched the first African-American President be sworn into office and now this exhibition will highlight, celebrate, and give a first-hand perspective on what it was like to be in Washington D.C and experience history unfold.

The Art of Living Black - The Vibrancy of Color

The exhibition features emerging and established artists. Each year, three artists are selected to receive the Jan Hart-Schuyers Artistic Achievement Award. This award is presented in memory of Jan Hart-Schuyers, artist, art activist, and co-founder of The Art Of Living Black, who passed in 1998. Rae Louise Hayward, artist, art activist, and co-founder of The Art of Living Black, passed in 2008. Her art celebrated the beauty of the African culture. Together, they created a venue that has paved the way for a new generation of artists to share their work.
Twice Taken Pictures – Ancestral Portraits by Darryl Sivad

Comprised of portraits of individuals holding the treasured images of family members accompanied by personal narratives, this exhibition captures a present nurtured by the past. Documenting 31 people from diverse backgrounds, photographer Darryl Sivad's imagery reveals the value these cherished relics have in their owners' lives. Touching on notions of identity and kinship, and loss and immortality, this series explores the profound ties sustained between descendants and ancestors, forming a visual genealogy of our collective lives.
Gonna Lay My Burdens Down – Milton Bowens

The African American Art & Culture Complex is proud to be a satellite location for the 14th Annual Art of Living Black!
This exhibition is Bay Area artist Milton Bowen’s first showing in San Francisco and is a collection of three solo exhibitions. Blood on the Fields, What Becomes of A Broken Soul, and Trying to Find My Way Home are Bowen’s most controversial exhibitions; combined together, they comprise a unique, soulful and thought-provoking artistic expression of fine art, addressing issues that are socially critical to contemporary African American society.
My Legacy – A Survey of Michael Chuke’s Work

This exhibition is a survey of sculptures created by Michael Chukes, who has been creating art since he was five years old. This exhibition focuses on the art work produced during various stages of his creative growth, starting from the 60s to present day. The exhibition will include drawings, woodcarvings, ceramics, woodwork, paintings and sculpture.
Josh Hursman

Winner of the Bring Your Own Art (BYOA) artist competition, Josh Hursman will be featuring his works of Tornado-like Images, pieces that swirl and morph into unknown images and bodies. The colors and the sizes of the work allow the viewer to become lost in this world of swirling turmoil.
Celebrating a Century of Creativity – Frances Catlett

A part of the annual Bay Area-wide African American art exhibition, The Art of Living Black, AAACC presents this special exhibition featuring the works of African American artist and icon, Frances Catlett. This exhibition fuses the art and poetry of Catlett’s work in celebration of her 100th birthday.
Americans Who Tell thE TRUTH

This exhibition features portraits of Americans who stand up for their principles. More than 50 portraits created by acclaimed artists Robert Shetterly will be included along with art and written works by Bay Area middle and high school students responding to Shetterly’s portraits. Bay Area truth tellers featured include Van Jones, Alice Waters, Eva Paterson, Daniel Ellsberg, Lateefah Simon, Cesar Chavez and more.
